One of our proudest attributions to this year’s Groove Festival is the prestigious Sony Xperia stage. This year will be the biggest year yet for the Sony Xperia stage with enough home-grown talent to rival the big names of the main stage. Sometimes seeing an act you don’t know can be quite daunting, but we’re here to tell you to bite the bullet and step outside your comfort zone! Who knows, your new favourite musician could be amongst one of the many fantastic acts, just waiting to be discovered by you. Here are just a few reasons why you should pay the hidden gem that is the Sony Xperia stage a visit over the Groove weekend.
First and foremost, we must stress the fantastic line-up for this year’s Sony Xperia stage. This year’s schedule features an intimate set with musical genius Jerry Fish, renowned for his engaging and captivating live performances. Other highlights include edgy, rock duo REWS, the loud and brash Bitch Falcon, defined by their boundless on-stage energy and gritty sound, both of which will storm the Sony Xperia stage on Saturday July 7th. Not to be outdone, Sunday July 8th will be headlined by favourites and much loved locally, The Eskies – The Eskies have brought their unique brand of folk noir/gypsy jazz/sea shanty and swaggering stage spectacle to ballrooms and booze houses far and wide, now they return to Groove for 2018. Singer-songwriter Marc O’Reilly is a definite for music lovers to check out.
Up close and personal with the music
While we all love the buzz and thrill of the main stage, it’s nice to take a break every now and then. Due to its size, the Sony Xperia stage gives you the chance to get up close and personal with the artists; intimate sets, undiscovered talent and an overall relaxed and casual vibe. Feel free to pop in and out for different acts at your own pace. Whether you’re enjoying the soothing acoustics of Dublin singer-songwriter Mark Geary’s honest tales of love and woe, or the Eskies unique brand of folk-noir, there’s something here for everyone.
Before they were cool
Catch the biggest names in the industry before anyone else. In the past, Groove has gathered a worthy reputation of welcoming acts moments before they break into the mainstream. The debut year of 2013 at Groove saw second stage performances from a blossoming Hudson Taylor and HamsandwicH, 2014 saw Wyvern Lingo take to the stage, in 2015 it was the turn of Corner Boy along with Maud in Cahoots, the following year Barq and Sample Answer were treating festival fans and in 2017 it was a hot bed of new talent including Katie Laffan, Ailbhe Reidy and Jack O’Rourke. Often overlooked at other festivals but certainly not at Groove, the Sony Xperia Stage is where all fans should spend some time. Over the last four years the Turning Pirate team have been booking the musicians and bands that are just about to break into the mainstream, 2018 will be no different! Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and go see an unfamiliar name at the Sony Xperia stage this year.
